Somerville Opts Out Of Secure Communities
Ever since its debut in 2008, the federal “Secure Communities” program has been deeply controversial. While most people agree that dangerous undocumented immigrants shouldn’t be in the US, there’s no consensus that the program is an effective way of getting them out. Now, debate over the initiative is being stoked anew by the city of Somerville, which stopped participating in Secure Communities this week.
Mayor Curtatone also explained his executive order and perspective on Secure Communities on Boston Public Radio on Wednesday.
