Marry Me A Little, The Songs of Sondheim
The Sondheim songbook revue, Marry Me A Little in onstage at The New Repertory Theatre through this weekend.
This is a particularly special production because it's the first time that Sondheim has allowed gender-blind casting, leaving the audience with both same-sex and heterosexual couples serenading each other on stage. It’s an interesting element, and one that shakes up the traditional melodies.
This revue is the brainchild of Craig Lucas. In 1980 he took a look at all of the music created by Stephen Sondheim that never made it into shows. Songs that were cut from production, some early in the writing process and some in the days just before a show opened--and all of them love songs to a degree.
The folks at the New Repertory Theatre were good enough to bring elements of this production to GBH. Today Jared Bowen sat down with actor Erica Spyres , director and choreographer Ilyse Robbins, and music director David McGrory.
