How 'Patent Trolls' Are Stifling Innovation In Boston And Beyond

In 2011, Congress passed a law that awarded patents to the person or company that was the first to file with the patent office, instead of the first to claim the invention. Legislators hoped that the overhaul of the patent system would reduce the number of lawsuits.

Local startups say so-called patent trolls have grown from just a nuisance into a full-blown threat to future innovation.

Seth Preibatsch, the founder of LevelUp, which is fighting a litany of patent lawsuits, and Kyle Alspach, who covers the startup and technology beat for the Boston Business Journal, discussed what patent trolling is and to what extent it's hampering innovation.
