Grocery Fury: Market Basket Employees Protest CEO Firing
Monday in Tewksbury, thousands of Market Basket workers protested outside company headquarters, demanding the return of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.
Demoulas was pushed out last month by members of his family, the latest salvo in a feud going back 40 years. The new leadership has tried to assure Market Basket’s 25,000 employees that nothing will change, but those protesting are asking customers to boycott the 71 stores until their demands are met.
Joe Schmidt was one of eight senior Market Basket employees who were fired over the weekend. He had worked at Market Basket for 27 years.
State Sen. Barry Finegold represents Lawrence, Andover, Dracut and Tewksbury and is one of 35 lawmakers who signed a letter calling for a boycott of Market Basket.
