Do We Still Need Priests?
When Pope Benedict XVI announced recently that he would step down as the head of the Catholic Church, it left many Catholics scratching their heads. Not simply because it was unexpected , but because—given the church strict adherence to tradition—the unexpected is almost unheard of.
In the wake of the announcement, some Catholics are asking whether this signals that it is time for the church to rethink it's position on everything from contraception to celibacy to gay marriage. Author Gary Wills is going a step further. He's asking whether it's time to eliminate priests.
He joined us on Boston Public Radio ahead of a Feb. 14th appearance at Harvard Book Store to discuss why he feels the preisthood is a failed tradition.
