Crisis In Crimea: Local Author Shares Insights
As soon as the Olympics were over two weeks ago, Russia sent troops into Ukraine in a standoff over control of Crimea. This is in spite of international condemnation that it’s essentially a Russian military occupation. Crimea’s regional government is now preparing for an upcoming referendum, widely expected to pass, to declare independence from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation.
- David Kalis spent almost three years in Russia during the chaotic fall of the Soviet Union. His forthcoming book about the experience is called “Vodka Shot, Pickle Chaser: A True Story of Risk, Corruption, and Self-Discovery Amid the Collapse of the Soviet Union.”
