The Civil Rights Act Turns 50: Boston's Untold Stories
As the fight for civil rights raged in the South, a group of prominent women from Boston traveled to Saint Augustine, Florida to participate in sit-ins in segregated restaurants. Among them was Mary Parkman Peabody, the 72-year-old mother of then Massachusetts Governor, Endicott Peabody, whose arrest made headlines across the country. Emily Rooney sat down with the daughters of the late Esther Burgess and Florence Rowe, who accompanied Ms. Peabody to Florida and joined her as she protested civil rights.
